Employees Waste Two Work Days Each Month Online

In a recent study by YouGov, employees admitted to wasting about 30% of their time online each month.  This equals about two work days per month.  If you have 200 employees making an average of $15/ hour wasting this much time surfing the Internet each month, $576,000 in wages is being wasted each year.

The study also found that most of this time was wasted on shopping sites.  Close behind shopping were news and travel sites.  Men were found to be the biggest time wasters, and many of them admitted that they occasionally went to adult entertainment sites at work.

This amount of personal surfing is a big drain on workforce productivity and a major legal liability risk, especially if employees are being distracted by adult entertainment and gambling sites.  Organizations can easily reduce personal Web surfing by employees by having a well-communicated Web-use policy in conjunction with Wavecrest’s Web monitoring and filtering software.  Wavecrest’s products help organizations pinpoint both positive and negative Web surfing.

New Release: CyBlock 5.7.0 and Cyfin 7.7.0

We recently released upgrades to our CyBlock and Cyfin products.  Below is a list of some of the exciting new features in these releases.

  • Hourly Filtering (CyBlock Only) - Allows users to surf normally blocked categories during lunch or after hours.  This feature is very easy to configure on the Block Web Categories screen.
  • Interactive Reports - Using the product’s internal database, you can now run a high-level report, then drill-down using hyperlinks without having to run another report through the interface.  These reports can be emailed and will save considerable time and effort.  They will also eliminate large file attachments.
  • Top Bandwidth Sites Report -This new report will identify which sites are hogging the most bandwidth.
  • Find a User - A new screen lets you locate users within the system quickly, listing their group and policies.
  • Automatic Removal of Import Data - You can now schedule to delete database data automatically.

To get the latest release, go to Administration – Product Updates.  Finally, if you have not already done so, get the new manual for your product. The manual gives detailed instructions on how to use all of CyBlock and Cyfin's features.  The manual for each product is located online under the product support documentation page.

BNSF Railway Monitors Web use with Cyfin Reporter

Burlington Northern Santa Fe (BNSF) is the number one railway company in the U.S.  Like most organizations today, it relies heavily on the Internet for many of its operations.  And like all such organizations, it faces a blizzard of Web-related issues.  Among the most serious are network security, legal liability and workforce productivity concerns.

BNSF employs more than 40,000 employees located in hundreds of facilities in 27 states and Canadian provinces.  They have been using Wavecrest Computing’s Cyfin Reporter software for six years now to monitor 25,000 employees with Web access.  By using Cyfin Reporter as part of the company’s Web-use management program, BNSF has been able to:

  • Ensure that the workforce takes maximum advantage of the productive potential of the Web
  • Prevent Web-related security, legal and productivity issues from becoming major problems.

BNSF centrally controls Cyfin Reporter at company headquarters in Fort Worth, Texas.  From that location, BNSF’s outbound Web traffic flows through two very large Microsoft ISA Servers. These servers generate a huge volume of logfiles, i.e., 2.5 GB per day.  Despite the large volume, Cyfin Reporter handles the load easily with its optional-use internal database that compresses logfiles to 20% of their original size.

Read this case study in its entirety to find out more about how BNSF uses Cyfin Reporter in their environment and why they say that Cyfin has “significantly reduced personal surfing in the workplace, helped prevent situations that could lead to legal liability, produced credible information to substantiate disciplinary actions, and helped increase workforce productivity.”

Tech Tip: Get Faster Reporting with the Database

When importing your logfiles into the database, the product compresses the data to 20% of its original size. It also organizes the data making the information available for faster reporting.  For example, if you run a report on a logfile with 1GB of data, it could take minutes, but if you run a report on that same data after it has been imported into the database, it only takes seconds.

In addition, with the database enabled, you can:

  • Manually import logfiles
  • Schedule a daily logfile import to occur automatically
  • Export the data to other applications for storage or further analysis
  • Delete data that you no longer need

To use the database, you must first enable it, and then you can begin importing logfiles.  To enable and use the database, go to Logfiles – Data Manager in the product menu.  For more detailed instructions on using the database, get the user manual for your product on the product support documentation Web page.
